The Motet Studio produces handmade pattern weavings
In linen and wool in a range from home decor, rebozos, throws, to art installations based on code weaving. All weavings are unique designs, created on four and eight shaft floor looms and tapestry looms at our workshop in Mexico City. Custom sizes and collaborations are welcome.
Code Meditations
Code Meditations are pattern weavings that are threaded onto the loom based on an alphanumeric code, similar to computer coding. The word or name which is coded into the warp determines the resulting pattern. In this project the names of people who have disappeared, whether through violence, or the turbulence of history, or for reasons unknown to anyone but themselves, are coded into the weavings. The process of weaving, which is essentially repetition, then becomes a poetic meditation on the name of the person. Decisions are made by the weaver on colors and other aesthetic nuances, similar to a musician improvising on a theme.
The resulting textile is not intended as a portrait but rather a presence in the world that signals some of the many things that textiles may represent for people. We choose to display them in a sculptural way that hints at the ephemeral, even calligraphic nature of the material in space, but they could as easily be blankets, banners, rugs, or flags, confirming the universal, polysemic and polyfunctional nature of the matter converted into fabric.
Lluvia sobre olas
(Rain on Waves)
Lluvia sobre olas (Rain on Waves) is a series of “overshot” patterns of Mexican wool on contrasting worsted wool warp creating a pattern reminiscent of rain on ocean waves. This series consists of throws, blankets, and hangings.
Motet Pattern Weaves
Motet Pattern Weaves consist of light gage Swedish Bockens linen or light gage wool. Some of the patterns are updated monk's belt blocks inspired by Malagasy colorways. Other designs are tight wave patterns, overshot twill, or plain weaves with supplemental wefts. These are generally rebozos or hangings.
